Getting the right wig size is the most crucial step for a natural look and all-day comfort. A well-fitting wig won’t slip or cause discomfort, giving you the confidence to wear it all day. Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide to measuring your head for a perfect wig cap fit. All you need is a flexible tape measure.
Step 1: Prepare Your Hair
Before you start, make sure your natural hair is as flat as possible. Braid, wrap, or pin it down securely. Using a wig cap is highly recommended as it mimics how your hair will sit when wearing the wig, ensuring the most accurate measurements.
Step 2: Measure the Circumference
This is the most important measurement. Place the tape measure at the centre of your front hairline. Wrap it around your head, just above your ears, to the nape of your neck and back to the starting point. Keep the tape snug but not tight. The average adult female head circumference in the UK is approximately 54-56cm (21.25-22.5 inches), which corresponds to an “Average” size wig.
Step 3: Other Key Measurements
For a custom or more precise fit, you may also want to take these two measurements:
- Front to Nape: Measure from your front hairline, over the crown of your head, to the nape of your neck.
- Ear to Ear (over the top): Measure from the top of one ear, over the top of your head, to the top of the other ear.
Once you have your measurements, compare them to the brand’s wig size chart. Remember, most ready-to-wear wigs have adjustable straps, giving you a bit of flexibility. If you find your measurements fall between two sizes, always opt for the larger one for ultimate comfort.
